Over the last few weeks, students in Lang and Lit completed a set of readings that represent the Postmodern sensibility that every subject has multiple perspectives upon it. Students considered our subject of what it means to be American from the perspectives of: a first generation Chinese-American woman living in San Francisco as told by her daughter; a second generation Hispanic woman revisiting her home country, the Dominican Republic, as told through a fictional lens; a Kiowa Native American man reminiscing on his upbringing on the Plains; and a Black American man living in Harlem, as told through a fictional lens. These stories were challenging reading at times, but the students are beginning to use insight in the way that they are approaching their texts.
Students also completed their second unit test.
The changes and amendments to the term grades are as follows:
Quarter 1: 45%
Tests 40%
Homework 20%
Quizzes 15%
Participation 15%
Notebook 10%
Quarter 2: 45%
Tests 40%
Homework 25%
Quizzes 20%
Participation 15%
Semester test: 10%
As you may note, students will no longer be graded on the upkeep of their notebooks, and that the overall weight of the grade has been redistributed in order to account for the semester test, which will be given in January.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
