Students were introduced to the poetic music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Jelly Roll Morton, and the musical poetry of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Jean Toomer.
These works round out our introduction to Modernism, and after our final discussions on Monday and Tuesday, our unit will end with a test on Thursday, Sept. 25.
Students engaged in peer review work this week, helping each other revise and edit their comparison paragraphs. In addition, students worked in partners to assess the Harlem Renaissance poetry in comparison to the earlier poems we have read. Having completed the comparison paragraphs, the oral work that is being presented in class, as each pair reports on one particular poem, reveals more savvy comparative interpretation.
