Course Overview
Language and Literature is the first part of a year-long required English course, usually completed in the sophomore year, designed to provide students with an overview of the American literary tradition and to solidify their foundations in the literacy skills necessary to complete the English requirements at SGCHS.
Students will develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through a variety of projects which study multiple genres drawn from the American tradition including: poetry, short stories, personal narratives, political speeches, critical essays, and novels. Directed vocabulary and grammar enrichment will support students' overall literacy development.
Class Requirements
Students will be expected to:
-Read assigned materials
-Maintain a notebook or binder
-Complete four unit tests
-Complete weekly vocabulary and grammar quizzes
-Complete daily homework assignments
-Prepare and deliver one oral presentation
-Engage in class activities and discussions
-Follow class procedures and school code of conduct
Grading
Grades for the course will be based on the following criteria:
Unit tests(4) 40%
Quizzes 15%
Homework 15%
Notebook 10%
Oral presentation 10%
Class participation 10%
Detailed rubrics for each graded area will be provided.
